The Fall

“But the Lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’”(Gen 3:9) Genesis 3 is known for explaining the origin of the sin of man as a result of the Fall. In Adam and Eve’s disobedience, they experience separation from God and immediately try to cover their shame with fig leaves (v.7), even attempting to hide from God (v.8). This is not unlike the shame we experience today. Sin separates us from God.

Adam hides but God calls out, “Where are you?” God doesn’t begin with accusation, but pursuit. He draws Adam out of hiding and near to Him. God already knew where Adam was and what he had done. In the same way, God already knows where we fall short and is just waiting for us to lay it down at His feet in repentance.

How is the way Adam hides himself in shame similar to our own desire to hide from our shame?

We aren’t called to come to God by being perfect, otherwise, there wouldn’t be any Christians. None of us are worthy, but Romans 5:8 tells us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. He receives us just as we are and through sanctification, He restores us to glory through His grace.

Let’s pray:

“Heavenly Father, Abba, we thank you and praise you for seeking us while we were still dead in our trespasses. Thank you for our adoption. Let us seek your face and know you more. Sanctify us and restore us to the glory you intend for us. In the holy name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.”
